| Often an overlooked publication, the background on the composition of Aller Retour New York has been noted and generalized by many Miller biographers. What has not been thoroughly explored is why, after its initial Paris publication, Aller Retour would appear in print only once in the United States during Miller's lifetime--and at that, privately printed in 1945. Due to its rather mysterious history, I undertake here to reveal the behind-the-scenes story from the initial publication in 1935 to the first official American publication of Aller Retour New York by New Directions in 1991. Archival materials reveal that Miller made attempts to republish the work and was at times frantic to have readily available copies for sale or for personal reference. The purpose of this research is not to examine the content of the text but rather to follow the long and winding trail of letters surrounding Aller Retour, originating with the initial release and ending with the New Directions publication in 1991. What is revealed is an intriguing glimpse into both Miller's business practices as well as his intricate network of friends and publishers. |
