The University of Kitakyushu Institute for Urban and Regional Policy
Studies strives to propose and initiate social contributions for advancement
of the Kitakyushu area, while creating greater value as a comprehensive
think tank open to industry, as well as the public and private sectors.
(1) Research on regional issues
Research projects are conducted on various issues, in the Kitakyushu area, based on which regional contributions are made through policy proposals, etc.
(2) Joint research of the Kanmon area
Research projects are conducted in cooperation with Shimonoseki City University Institute for Collaborative Community Development at “Kanmon chiiki kyodo kenkyukai (collaborative study group of Kanmon area)” that has been jointly run since 1994 with a primary focus on “development of Kanmon.”
(3) Funded research
Research projects are conducted across a range of subjects and challenges upon request from Kitakyushu City and other local governments, public organizations, private companies, etc.
(4) Research exchange activities and others
We engage in research exchange projects with the “Incheon Development Institute” in Incheon Metropolitan City, South Korea, and hold various informal meetings on research, and symposiums, etc.
Faculty at the Institute for Urban and Regional Policy Studies also focus on educational activities as full-time and part-time instructors, etc., at the Faculties of The University of Kitakyushu and other universities.

Conducts research from the perspective of promotion of utilization of public transportation and elimination of dependence on automobiles based on a vision of an urban future that corresponds to diversity in lifestyles, and measures and systems toward its realization.
Urban Analysis and Community Development by Renovation
Conducts various research projects in association with practical urban activities, including a recent focus on community development by renovation.
Economics of Consumption, Consumer Policies, and Public Opinion Surveys
Conducts various research projects from the perspective of administrative policies with respect to understanding transformation trends mainly focused on the needs of Kitakyushu citizens and their effects on the outlook for society and consumers.
Social Work, Forensic Social work, and Mental Health
Conducts various researches on social and psychological issues in communities focusing on minorities aiming at the realization of a society where diverse people can live comfortably.
Urban Policy and Regional Development, and Community Development through Sports
Conducts research on comprehensive urban policy toward regional development; including research projects on regional political systems, administrative reforms, civic collaboration, local revitalization which utilized the sports, etc.
Local Government Finance, Regional Development, and Economic Policy
Conducts research on the structural reform of public sector such as fiscal federalism, municipal amalgamation, and public-private partnership.
Regional Industrial Policy, Small Business Management, and Social System Engineering
Conducts research on manufacturing as a key, including methods for transformation of local industrial cities, fostering supporting industries in Vietnam, creation and cultivation of startup companies.
The predecessor of this Institute was “The University of Kitakyushu
Institute of Comparative Regional Studies” that was established in 1959.
As a social science research institute, it made contributions to local
community development by accumulating research results in the fields of
industrial economy and social welfare of the Kitakyushu area.
In April 2006, this institute merged with the research department of “Kitakyushu Urban Association” in order to expand and diversify and launched it program activities as “The University of Kitakyushu Institute for Urban and Regional Policy Studies”.
On November 20, 2015, “The University of Kitakyushu Institute for Urban and Regional Policy Studies” changed a name of it to “Institute for Regional Strategy, The University of Kitakyushu”.
